Capabilities, Performance and Test Results for a WAAS Verification Receiver

Lawrence Burns, Frederick Ventrone Jr.

Abstract: This paper presents the high level architecture, functional capabilities, performance goals, and initial test results for a Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) Verification Receiver. This receiver was developed by Rockwell Collins Avionics & Communications Division for dual-use GPS avionics applications in support of a joint research and development initiative of the FAA Satellite Program Office (AND-730) and the DoD Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWC-AD). Receiver test results will be used to support evaluation of DoD integrity and precision approach requirements and evaluation of the FAA WAAS. This paper first highlights the hardware and software architecture modifications undertaken to transform the DoD's Standard 5-channel Miniature Airborne GPS Receiver (MAGR) into a 24-channel Enhanced MAGR (EMAGR) WAAS Verification Receiver (WVR) which tracks all GPS satellites in view on both the L1 and L2 frequencies and tracks two WAAS satellites on L1. Next, the receiver’s Standard Positioning Service (SPS) performance improvements due to the application of WAAS corrections are shown, including Fast Rate and Long Term Corrections, the Ionospheric Corrections, and the Tropospheric Correction model. Initial test results are provided with the receiver in a static environment using both a WAAS simulation and the NSTB signal in space.
