Honeywell/USAF Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRDA) Have Approach Demonstration Hanscom AFB

Abstract: Honeywell and the USAF have just completed a demonstration of a P(Y)-Code Difkrential Precision Approach System. The demonstration was based on differential GPS measurements provided from an RTCA DO-2 17 compliant SCAT I ground reference station modified to use carrier smoothed P(Y)-Code measurements. The corrections were obtained fkom a 12- channel military GPS receiver. The differential navigation solution was obtained using RTCA DO-217 defined approach data transmitted to the aircraft display and autopilot systems, on a military aircraft using standad IL S interface conventions. The aircraftinstallation included two GPS receiver types, integrated into an inertial reference (EGI). Both hybrid and autonomous DPGS solutions were evaluated in the demonstration. The airborne equipment utilized 5 and 12-channel GPS receivers obtained from two vendors. This paper evaluates the performance of both integrated and autonomous architectures and presents comparative results. In additiom data is presented compmi.ug the relative accuracy of C/A and P(Y) code measurements. In order to execute the CDRA, the Honeywell modified their SLS-2000 SCAT I Ground Reference Station to use P(Y)-Code measurements fium a Trimble “Force-12” GPS receiver. The integration process was completed in July with Flight Testing in August. The objective of this paper is to present the capabilities of the military aircraft to perform precision approach operations using DGPS signals. Additionally the tests were executed to evaluate variations of the GPS and inertial measurements used.
