GLONASS for Offshore Applications

Ole Ørpen, Paul Hinsch

Abstract: The offshore oil and gas industry requires several independent positioning system for many applications, specifically Dynamic Positioning (DP) applications. Fugro Starfix (Europe) AS has for the past year been evaluating GLONASS to meet these needs. GLONASS is the Russian satellite navigation system equivalent to GPS. Data is presented from static zero baseline and 1100 km baseline differential GLONASS tests using the Ashtech GG24 receiver. The accuracy of the 1100 km baseline test in Oslo using a reference in Tromsø was less than 5 m 95 % Horizontal. Data is also presented indicating that the range rate corrections of the GG24 are not accurate enough to support update interval in the one minute range. Differential GLONASS data is also presented from the oil rig Ocean Alliance on the “Ormen Lange” field off Mid Norway. A baseline of about 900 km gave approximately 5 m 95% accuracy relative to a mutli reference station DGPS solution.
