Research of Displacement and Frequency of Tall Building under Wind Load Using GPS

Abstract: The paper aims to introduce an efficient GPS-based method to measure displacement and tkqpency of tall building under wind load The t%eqyency and displacement of tall building and long bridge under typhoon and other bad weather is a main focus of structure research. Traditionally we use accelerate meter, laser method and total station, But all the above methods limit to the short story buildings, furthermore, they cannot be used in real-time condition or in bad weather, The base frequmcy of tall building is approximately 0.1 Hz to 10 Hz. The displacement is due to the height, wind pressure, structure and materials it adopted. GPS, whose application is getting more and more broader, can solve these problems, We developed a software and adopted OTF(Ambiguity Resolution On The Fly) method to meet these requirements. The software can solve ambiguities of data whose sample rate is up to 20Hz and pursue frequency and spectmm analysis simultaneously. In practice we measured the displacement and frequency of Diwang Tower(324. 16m) under typhoon in Shenzhen city of south china. Simultaneously another group used accelerate meter to measure the dynamic character of the Tower, which can be compared with the GPS-group result. After processed the &ta received by the receiver, we obtained the north-to-south and east-to-west displacement of the building and also, used the FFT method to get the frequency of the above two directions. Compared with the other group, the two results are commensurate. The accuracy of the result is about 10mm. It is suggested that the GPS-based method we adopted and the software we developed canbeusedin practicean~ GPScanbeusedin the field of Civil Engineering.
