Abstract: | The Compact GPS Embedded Module (CGEM) III GPS receiver, developed by Rockwell Collins, was flight tested onboard a KC-10 over the North Pole. The CGEM is embedded in the FMS-800 Flight Management System and provided a Kahuan Filtered Integrated Navigation (INAV) solution with inputs ffom the CGE~ an Inertial Navigation Unit (INU) and an air data computer. The test flight departed from Tlude, Greenland flew over the North Pole three times and then returned to McGuire AFB. The analysis compares the data from the INU, GPS and the Kahnan Filter during the flight and in particular at the pole. The integrated navigation solution was assessed during the fligh~ comparing it with the INU and GPS data. The benefits of an integrated solution are described, in particular right at the pole, where the integrated solution used the absolute accuracy of the GPS data and the direction of flight from the INU to estimate the track over the pole. To investigate the behavior of the integrated solution when sensor data was lost, a test was performed that removed the GPS as a sensor and compared the integrated solution driven only by the INU with the INU data itself. It was demonstnted that the integrated solution out performs the INU. As a result of the testing, we were able to determine the behavior of each of the navigation solutions within the polar region. The GPS aided by true air speed (A) and heading (H), provided an accurate navigation solution while the aircraft was two or more miles from the North Pole. However, when the aircraft flew directly over the pole anomalies were obsemed. Both the INU-only and the INAV solutions performed well within specification throughout the flight. |
