The NavSymm SHARPE/XR6 A Compact High Performance 12 Channel GPS Receiver With Integral Non-Volatile Solid State Recorder (SSR) for Data Storage, Removing the Need for a Logging Computer or Real-Time Data Link

Abstract: This paper describes the latest GPS product from Navstar Systems Limited of Northampton, England. The SHARPE/XR6 is a compact, high dynamic, 12 channel GPS receiver capable of generating position, velocity and time solutions at a 10 Hz rate from all satellites in view, with a latency of 80 ms. A large selection of RTCM messages are catered for including Message Types 1, 2, and 9 (for standard DGPS). Message Types 18 and 19 for carrier smoothed solutions, and Message Types 20, 21 and 3 for RTK solutions better than 5 cm. The SHARPE/XR6 can be configured as either a base station or a mobile receiver. The SHARPE/XR6 has three serial ports capable of various baud rates up to 115 kbaud. The first is a dedicated CDU port for initialisation and monitoring the receiver. The other 2 ports are selectable for use as a second CDU port, an RTCM input or output port, or as a Recorder Port outputting standard and configurable ASCII, NMEA and binary data messages for a variety of applications. The SHARPE/XR6 is available with optional built in non-volatile data storage in the form of flash memory. Several configurations are available from 2 Mb to 32 Mb. The data storage can be considered as a fourth internal port and any combination of messages, measurements or data may be logged to the internal memory. The contents of the memory may then be downloaded to any standard IBM PC via one of the serial ports at a later stage. The non-volatile flash memory is totally contained within the sealed receiver case and can only be accessed via the serial ports. This makes the receiver ideal for hostile conditions where dust, moisture, shock and vibration, and general atmospheric conditions would prevent use of either removable memory cards or non-ruggedised personal computers.
