Abstract: | There are a large number of organizations that develop standards for navigation equipment, and they have developed a surprising number of standards that designers need to be aware of. The standards are developed to meet specific needs, but often find more general usage. Different types of standards include: • Standards designed for communicating between navigation modules and other equipment • Standards developed to promote common performance and human interfaces • Standards developed to facilitate integration between navigation sensors • Standards developed for broadcasts from providers to users • Standards and equipment specifications developed for specific applications • Standards for terminology, specification and testing This paper provides an overview of the standards activities known to the authors. It describes the standards-development activities, their sponsoring organizations, the intended applications, the standards themselves, and the practical uses of the standards. The paper also provides contact information that will enable designers of navigation equipment to obtain the appropriate documents for their work. |
