Abstract: | This paper describes the development of a carrier phase based prototype system developed using the standard 5 channel DOD PLGR (Precision Lightweight GPS Receiver) in SPS Ll mode. The prototype demonstrates the ability to perform rapid single centimeter to decimeter level static and kinematic surveys over varying baselines and satellite geometries. The performance demonstrated supersedes several 6-10 channel similar handheld “~1 m surveyors” with the added benefit of providing superior code-only solutions. Enhancements to the PLGR software required for this application are discussed briefly, including the development of carrier phase measurements, ‘true time’ GPS time synchronization, and various operational enhancements to facilitate typical survey application functions. The integration and interim testing of the PLGR-derived system and results to date are presented, including the recent application of the PLGR-S to real-time kinematic solutions. Prospective error sources, limitations, and projected accuracies are examined, concluding in a summary to date and a brief overview of projected activities. |
