Abstract: | The Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) of the FAA, will allow receivers of the WAAS signals to set their timing to the Master Clock of the U.S. Naval Observatory, UTC(USNO,MC), a high accuracy real time implementation of the international reference time UTC This will be important for timed electronic systems, particularly avionics and communication systems, and will assist in keeping the planned worldwide WAAS extensions seamlessly synchronized with each other. The difference of the WAAS network time (WNT), and the implementation of UTC by the USN0 will be measured aud transmitted as a Delta value by the WAAS data stream. The paper describes the connection between, and performance of, the various time references of the GPS, WNT, the USNO, and the international UTC as published monthly by the Iuternational Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM). The actual diEerence between these scales changes very slowly and it can be included in the delta value. Real-time UTC via the WAAS is currently estimated to be kept within 8ns of the final BIPM value. |
