Abstract: This paper presents a simulation tool to evaluate the landing performance of a satellite based landing system. The objective of this work is to have the capability to assess the overall system accuracy and integrity performance. The results of this work are valuable to standard forming organizations such as RTCA and ICAO in the development and validation of CAT I/II/III landing system requirements. The satellite based landing system simulation presented in this paper consists of GPS satellite constellation, a LAAS simulation, an airborne navigation system, and a generic aircraft model with autopilot. The LAAS ground station simulation can be configured to simulate three or four reference receivers with accuracy changed according to the Ground Accuracy Designator. The airborne navigation system integrates the LAAS airborne receiver with inertial system and radar altimeter. The aircraft model with autopilot is generic and can be configured to represent three categories of aircraft: air transport, regional aircraft, and business jet. The generic nature of the aircraft model enables the results to be representative of aircraft of the same category without being restricted to any specific airplane type. A wind model is also included to assess performance under a variety of steady wind and gust conditions. In order to test system integrity, this simulation tool is capable of simulating failure scenarios such as satellite ephemeris errors and receiver measurement errors. This capability is valuable when validating system accuracy and integrity requirements. Examples of simulation results presented in this paper illustrate the capability of the simulation tool.
