Analyzing the Performance Characteristics of a Precise Point Positioning System

Mohamed Abdel-Salam, Yang Gao and Xiaobing Shen

Abstract: This paper discusses the characteristics of a precise point positioning (PPP) system based on un-differenced dualfrequency code and carrier phase observations. Precise orbit and satellite clock corrections from IGS or several other organizations are essential for PPP processing. To analyze the characteristics of such precise point positioning system, the differences between the broadcast ephemeris and the precise ephemeris are described. The positioning results and observation residuals based on different ephemeris data are then presented and compared. Numerical calculations are based on a software package developed at the Department of Geomatics Engineering, University of Calgary, where several SPP and PPP processing methods including P1-P2-CP model are implemented.
