Abstract: The purpose of this paper is a proposal of creating an environmentally-friendly traffic system without building the costly infrastructure. Connecting with information given by 3-D geographic database with contour line, the car operation in stepping the accelerator and braking will be made automatically. And, this will surely support a safe driving. Three typical examples of car driving are shown as below; (1) Automatic acceleration and slowdown at the beginning and ending of the slope. (2) Setting the distance between two cars considering ups and downs of the road. There should be a different safe distance between two cars running the upward slope and the downward slope. By getting the information of 3-D geographic configuration, you can get the information of the right place where the vehicle is running the upward slope or the downward slope. (3) Supporting system for prevention of dangerous accident in accessing a curve of the road. From 3-D geographic configuration, a driver can read a configuration in curve, and he can receive information for alerting him in connecting the condition of curve. There is some difference between each optimum speed from the standpoint of size in curve, or angle of slope in side direction, or in longitudinal direction. In conclusion, we think 3-D geographic database will cause a revolution to break out on the traffic system in 21th century. That is, we'll be able to have an environmentally-friendly driving system at low-cost. This system's intention is creating a safe and comfortable AHS (Advanced Cruise-Assist Highway Systems) minimizing the destruction of environment on the earth. The greatest achievement in residential maps and geographic software for car navigation systems accomplished by ZENRIN, a leading company in Japan, has given a strong confidence on our insistence. In the market of ITS in 21th century, ZENRIN will be able to play an important role, we're sure.
