Abstract: VICE4RAIL (Hybrid Virtualized Testing for Certification of EGNSS in Railway Train Positioning) is a European research initiative focused on accelerating the integration of satellite technologies (EGNSS) into the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS). The project aims to enhance railway safety, interoperability, and efficiency through two strategic objectives: first, by supporting the development of a standardized methodology for certifying GNSS-based train positioning systems and second, by designing innovative tools such as the HyVICE platform, which enables testing of satellite technologies in both realworld and virtualized railway scenarios under diverse operational conditions. One of the key innovations is the creation of the HyVICE testing environment, which combines real-world and simulated data to provide a comprehensive, scalable, and cost-effective solution for GNSS performance validation. This approach is a significant improvement over traditional testing methods, which often require expensive on-site evaluations and are limited in their geographic scope. The project also pioneers the use of advanced error modelling and simulation techniques to address complex GNSS performance issues, such as multipath effects and non-line-of-sight signals, which are critical for ensuring the reliability of train localization systems. By drawing on best practices from the automotive and maritime sectors, VICE4RAIL is developing a harmonized, cross-sectoral approach to GNSS certification, paving the way for future innovations in rail technology.
