A Method to Estimate and Correct Iono Error from a Baseline Model in a Single Frequency GNSS Receiver

Paul W McBurney

Abstract: While there are multiple methods for providing ionospheric corrections in a GNSS receiver, all of them can still have residual iono error, especially in the geomagnetic region along the equator or during strong solar activity. Furthermore, there is a need to improve measured ionospheric availability at individual frequencies as multi frequency receivers can be jammed and denied the classical multi-frequency approach. A combined position and ionospheric solution using a reduction in variables technique enables estimation of ionosphere estimates. These estimates can be similar in accuracy to classical multi frequency estimates in conditions similar to what is required for dual frequency estimates. The paper presents the solution along with empirical results in a geomagnetic region.
