GALILEO is launched

Olivier ONIDI

Abstract: On March 26, 2002, the European Council reached a unanimous political agreement on the launch of the European Civil Satellite Navigation Programme: GALILEO. The European Commission and the European Space Agency (ESA) have released € 1.1 billion of public funds for the development phase of GALILEO. A Joint Undertaking is established to manage the Development Phase and to prepare the Deployment Phase. It ensures a single and effective management of the program and allows a public and private financing combination. A broad description of the planning is given, as well as the various service levels that Galileo will provide. Issues of global interoperability are also addressed.
