| Abstract: | Some navigation systems are introducing authentication mechanisms to increase robustness of their positioning services against spoofing. However, the introduction of authentication should minimize the impact in existing and future receivers, hence some compromise must be done. This paper will examine the trade-offs and potential solutions that could be feasible for the next generation of GNSS systems, which offer more flexibility in designing an authentication solution than the addition of authentication features to current systems and signals. The focus will be especially on the ranging authentication capability. The paper will explore the trade-offs on the signal design and the synergies among the different authentication features, to achieve a holistic authentication concept. As a case study, the paper will consider Galileo. |
