Abstract: | The mainstream Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) constellations in Medium Earth Orbits (MEO), Inclined Geo Synchronous Orbits (IGSO) and Geostationary Orbits (GEO), which are primarily used for Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) can only provide positioning accuracy that varies from several to dozens of meters, when no Precise Point Positioning (PPP) techniques are used. Even when PPP is used, centimeter-level accuracy with a rapid convergence cannot be achieved everywhere and at any time. This is therefore not sufficient for critical emerging applications such as autonomous vehicles like autonomous cars, flying taxis and drones which demand fast convergence of centimeter-level positioning accuracy, anywhere and anytime in the area of service. In order to address this limitation, Low Earth Orbit (LEO) GNSS has emerged as a promising alternative navigation solution, potentially providing positioning accuracy in the decimeters or even in centimeter level range, with a convergence time about 10 times shorter compared to conventional MEO GNSS methods. In this context, this paper presents the simulation of BOCcos(2,2) and ALTBOC(7.5,BOC(2,2)) signals as modulation schemes considered for the UAE’s Global Navigation Satellite augmentation System (GNSSaS) program, a LEO GNSS constellation project aimed at providing high precision positioning determination in the future. The simulation includes a GNU Radio implementation of the signal generation and signal processing blocks. The results of the simulation showed good comparison to the theoretical results. This simulation provides an insight of the performance and characteristics of the LEO GNSSaS signals that would set a framework for the functional on the ground testing and validation work. |
