Analysis of Smartphone Based Dual Frequency RTK Performance Using RF Shielded Box

Abstract: As GNSS dual-frequency measurements can be collected through smartphones and the performance of receiver chipsets improves, it is expected that smartphone based dual frequency RTK will be possible. However, when measurements are collected through a smartphone, the signal strength of the GPS L5 measurements is lower than that of the L1 frequency, resulting in poor measurement quality. This is because the L5 frequency antenna of smartphones is not suitable for receiving GNSS signals, and antenna performance needs to be improved to apply dual frequency RTK. In this study, the GPS L1/L5 dual frequency RTK was applied and performance was analyzed using the measurements of the smartphone that received the repeated signal inside the RF shielded box, thereby confirming the possibility of improving the cm-level precise positioning when improving the antenna. The RF shielded box was made in consideration of portability, and static and dynamic tests were performed using a commercial Samsung Galaxy S22+. As a result of the static test, using GPS L1/L5 dual frequency RTK, TTFF was improved by 46% compared to GPS L1 only RTK, enabling cm-level precise positioning within about 3 minutes. In the case of the dynamic test, cm-level precise positioning was possible within about 5 minutes by improving TTFF by 53% compared to GPS L1 only by using the same GPS L1/L5 dual frequency RTK. From these results, TTFF can be improved by using dual frequency RTK when the quality of L5 frequency measurements is improved. Therefore, for practical applications, it is essential to improve the L5 frequency antenna performance of commercial smartphones.
