A Distributed, Collaborative Strategy for In-Situ Monitoring of Multipath Errors

Abstract: The process of verifying correct operation of terrestrial navigation aids for civil aviation (NavAids) is based on flight inspection, which requires dedicated flights with specialized aircraft and highly-skilled personnel dedicated to the matter. A way of reducing expenses while asserting the correct functioning of all relevant NavAids would be to aggregate data collected from scheduled revenue flights. This paper proposes a method that will create this capability and discusses the foreseeable operational changes that will need to be enacted for the method to become feasible. If deployed, this distributed, collaborative data collection will drastically reduce expenses associated with flight inspection, while guaranteeing correct operation of NavAids, with highest confidence in the areas of highest demand.
