Abstract: | In December 2000, IMO gave the green light to the revision of SOLAS, chapter V [1] which includes the description of the equipment requirements of seagoing vessels concerning navigational systems. This means that, after years of negotiations, making proposals and lobbying, from mid next year a beginning will be made with the introduction of the ‘Automatic Identification System’ AIS. Then, following a transitional phase, each vessel over 300 GT coming under SOLAS must have on-board AIS-station equipment as from mid 2008. |
