Honeywell's H-764GU Protection Of the Blended Solution to Support Operations within the CNS/ATM Environment

Abstract: In preparation for the upcoming Global Air Traffic Management (GATM) environment, many DoD and industry leaders are considering how their current systems and products will evolve allowing their customer platforms to operate in the future Communication Navigation Surveillance / Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) airspace. A key element of the GATM navigation solution is the solution integrity. Honeywell has implemented an integrity scheme that makes use of DO-229 Fault Detection and Exclusion (FDE) information for INS/GPS solution protection. We call this approach: Protection Of Blended Solution (POBSŽ). This concept takes advantage of the processing already being done by the EGI's embedded GPS Receiver Application Module (GRAM) sensor and develops a "DO-229 like" Horizontal Uncertainty Level (HUL) for the tightly-coupled GPS/Inertial solution. This method is being used to make available a level of integrity for the blended solution that has previously not been provided by the EGI. Benefits of this approach include an increased level of confidence in the integrated solution and an increase in the availability of a blended navigation solution during GPS integrity outages, satellite failures or during either intentional or unintentional jamming of the GPS signal. This is accomplished through calibrated inertial coasting of the blended solution. This method may be considered a "loose" integrity scheme that provides near 100% availability for Enroute navigation. A more complex tightly coupled scheme that provides near 100% availability for non-precision approach called the Honeywell Integrated GPS/INS Hybrid (HIGHŽ) Integrity method is in development and will be available in the EGI as a future upgrade. Items presented in the paper are the POBSŽ design and implementation for both SPS and PPS operation, test descriptions and results from lab/simulation and live sky testing.
