Abstract: A meta-signal is obtained when two Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signal components are considered together and processed as a single entity to obtain better tracking performance and high-accuracy code measurements. The joint processing of signals from different carrier frequencies however leads to ambiguous code measurements and requires the recovery of a complex subcarrier, which is obtained when the two side-band components are combined. Fundamental relationships between GNSS meta-signals, the Double Phase Estimator (DPE) and dual-frequency measurement combinations are investigated. It is shown that a meta-signal can be effectively processed using the DPE, whose output, the subcarrier phase, is equivalent to the wide-lane linear combination of the carrier phase measurements obtained from the two original signals. It is also shown that the final code measurements obtained from a meta-signal can be reconstructed from the pseudoranges and carrier phases obtained from the original signal components. Theoretical results are supported by experiments conducted using real measurements from the Alternate Binary Offset Carrier (Alt-BOC) signal and its side-band components.
