Pulsars as Next Generation Grid Timing Sources

Peter Fuhr

Abstract: The electric grid relies on precise timing synchronization for accurate measurements, state estimation, protection and control over local, regional and national scale wide area networks. Satellite-based timing signals are used in the vast majority of these cases. We have been investigating the use of millisecond rotation pulsars as an effective alternative time source for next generation grid applications. Findings of our studies and preliminary experimental results will be presented.
