LEO+GEO Satellite Navigation New studies and Innovations

Abstract:	This paper gives hardware simulation results of experimentations concerning navigation using signals transmitted by LEO and GEO satellites. This results was obtained in the frame of an European Community study, before the EC choice for a GALILEO MEO concept, allowing more navigation accuracy and GPS system interoperability for the European component of GNSS2. Most of the hardware and software developed can be reused for GALILEO experimental validations, in the frame of the Galileo System Test Best. The INES concept ( Innovative Navigation European System ) consist in a GNSS2 system made of LEO navigation payloads using one or several host constellations, and GEO navigation payloads. These payloads are supposed to transmit only Open Access Service navigation signals ( C/A codes ). INES hardware has been manufactured and tested for EC GNSS2 R&D, under CNES management. A complete INES simulator has been developed by GSSl. This simulator uses the E1 and the E4 European GNSS2 frequency bands. The technical feasabilty of such a GEO-LEO system has bee demonstrated, thanks to a SEXTANT INES receiver fed by a GNSS2 GSSl simulator. INES navigation results using the mentioned test bench are provided. These results show an accuracy compatible with the specified aeronautical Non Precision Approach needs. The GNSS2 GSSl simulator is also able to manage a GEO+MEO constellation, and/or a network of 64 ground pseudolites accessible from space.
