GPS Program Update

Elizabeth Roper

Abstract: The GPS constellation and the supporting operational squadron has performed exceptionally well since declaration of Full Operational Capability on 27 April 1995. However, it is imperative to understand the support infrastructure behind the constellation and operational squadron to fully appreciate the magnitude of GPS operations. As the command responsible for sustainment of GPS, Headquarters Air Force Space Command (HQ AFSPC) supports the space and ground segments of the constellation. Once HQ AFSPC provides satellite vehicles and operations and maintenance funding, it is the responsibility of the 14th Air Force Commander to perform GPS operations. Day-to-day operations of the GPS constellation is delegated through the 50th Space Wing to the 2d Space Operations Squadron (2 SOPS).
