TrigNet The Network of Active GPS Base Stations for South Africa

G. Hedling, A.Parker and R. Wonnacott

Abstract: With the increased use of GPS as a positioning tool for a variety of applications, a country-wide array of active GPS base stations is being established in South Africa which will supplement the current passive network of highly visible and easily accessible survey monuments and marks. The array, which is known as TrigNet, will consist of approximately 40 active base stations that will provide both post-processing data and real time correction services. A wide area solution is to be used to compute the real time DGPS corrections. Besides providing a ground based GPS augmentation service, data from the network will be used for atmospheric water vapour estimation, monitoring of short and long term geophysical disturbances, support the IGS programs, various GNSS initiatives and other scientific applications. A proposal is made to establish a National geo-spatial standard through which surveyors will be required to supply high quality consistent geo-spatial products referenced to the National Control Survey network. Since TrigNet will be an integral part of the National Control Survey network, the services and products provided by the array will form a key element in the National geo- spatial standard.
