Abstract: Europe is currently in the definition phase of an independent, global, European-controlled, satellite based navigation system called Galileo. Work on Galileo is currently being carried out within the frameworks of projects funded by the European Commission and the European Space Agency. One of the European Commission projects called GALA (Galileo Architecture Definition Study) has been tasked with defining the overall architecture of Galileo, including the space, ground and support segments. Within the GALA project, GMV is in charge of defining the Galileo Support Segment. The primary purpose of the support segment is to validate by means of computer simulations or by using real HW, the high level as well as the low level specifications. In addition, it will also allow for specific design optimization and the analysis of critical design issues. It is intended to provide a set of facilities supporting the overall development process of Galileo until the system is fully operational. The Galileo Support Segment will contain the Galileo system models and database, as well as an ensemble of software tools required to support the Galileo design through simulation. Some HW modules will be required as well -- mainly for demonstration and validation of the system performances. The Support Segment will need to be adapted to the unavoidably evolving nature of the Galileo design. With this in mind, it will have a scalable and flexible architecture, both from a HW and software point of view. This flexibility will allow the easy incorporation of updates and replacements of tools and models. The Galileo Support Segment will contain the following core tools: 쳌¨ Design Support Tools: Including different activities such as system trade-offs, performance analyses, algorithm development and optimization, etc… 쳌¨ Demonstration Support Tools and Facilities: Including different activities such as system and applications demonstration, promotion tools, etc… 쳌¨ Validation Support Tools and Facilities: Including different activities which support the in-orbit validation, signal-in-space testing, etc… 쳌¨ Safety Tools: Including RAMS and critical point analyses These tools and facilities will cover the entire life of the Galileo project starting with constellation design and continuing through the in-orbit validation stage. Keywords: Galileo, GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems), support segment
