Abstract: | During 2000, the European Commission and the European Space Agency are conducting a number of definition studies for the proposed Galileo GNSS-2 system. The Galileo European Multimodal Integrated Navigation User Service (GEMINUS) study will define the navigation and navigation-related communications services provided by Galileo, and will therefore be the primary work from which the architecture definition activities will flow, and from which recommendations will be made for any possible Public Private Partnership (PPP) between a private industry consortium and the European Union. The study is progressing well and will report in time for the December meeting of the EU Transport Council, at which meeting the move to the development phase for Galileo will be discussed and, hopefully, approved. GEMINUS takes a user-based approach and seeks commercial opportunities for providing Galileo’s services. The study will deduce a set of services that the potential users demand, and will recommend ways of recovering revenues wherever possible. |
