Abstract: | This paper reports on the present status of the U.S. Navy’s Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center, San Diego investigation of methods to enhance military navigation accuracy and robustness in the tactical operational environment using Link-16, GPS, and other navigation sensors in a synergistic fashion. This study considered minimal impact techniques that could take advantage of the individual features of existing navigation sensors (GPS, Link-16, INS) already installed aboard military platforms to design an overall navigation architecture whose performance is significantly greater than the sum of the individual sensor capabilities. There are two principal areas of investigation for this program – data fusion and communications link changes. The data fusion portion has been investigating the benefits and impacts of optimized processing of sensor data from Link-16, GPS, and inertial sensors to provide a fully integrated source of navigation data with maximum accuracy, integrity, and availability across multiple platforms and mission scenarios. The communications link area is investigating the potential of the present Link-16 communications link to support robust and rapid transfer of GPS augmentation and navigation operations data, such as precise time, initialization and reacquisition data, black key distribution, moving target and waypoint data, and GPS corrections. The present status of the integration of Link-16, GPS, and inertial sensor data on military platforms will be noted as well as proposed changes to take advantage of the potential benefits noted in this study. Recommendations, based on modeling and simulation results to date, for future analytic and hardware demonstration efforts, are presented. |
