TRINAV EXPRESS A DGPS Positioning Reference for Deep Water Drilling Rigs

Cato Rypdal

Abstract: Semi-submersible drilling rigs using Dynamic Position- ing are totally dependent on highly accurate and very re- liable GPS positioning solutions. The design of the rigs makes good antenna installations challenging. In addition, the GPS system used must be able to cope with situations such as high multipath envi- ronments and lost reference station links. The reliability of the total positioning solution is critical. An important requirement is that failure of any single component in the positioning system must not cause the positioning service to fail.
