GPS Grade Control for Construction

Brian S. Smith

Abstract: Progressive contractors are always looking for ways to improve productivity and prevent costly mistakes. The reason grade control is so important to the contractor is the grade tolerances required by contract. In order to provide a smooth ride and control materials costs our Highway Departments usually require a finish tolerance of plus or minus five hundredths of a foot. Airport construction tolerances can be tighter than this. With all the different layers, a highway project can involve hundreds of acres of finish to this tolerance. House pads for subdivisions are finished to a tolerance of plus or minus one tenth of a foot.
