Traceable Calibration of a Phase Noise Standard

Abstract: We report two RF measurement methods that we use for the traceable calibration of an additive phase noise standard (APNS) of the same type as the AM/PM noise standard developed at NIST. The ratio method makes both the carrier and noise measurements traceable to RF power, while the absolute method makes the noise Power Spectral Density (PSD) measurements traceable to a noise temperature in Kelvin. The demonstration that the two independent traceability paths yield compatible uncertainty intervals is a strong validation of the uncertainty models.
