Abstract: | As airports move into the 21st century, they are faced with increasing demands for greater and greater participation in technology-based solutions to on and off-airport challenges. To address these changing requirements, airports are beginning to consider specialized programs integrating various technologies into airport-specific solutions. These airport-specific issues involve maintaining and improving aviation-related services to airport partners and customers - the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), air carriers serving the airport, the travelling public, and neighboring communities surrounding the airport. For the Chicago Department of Aviation (DOA), the enabling technologies of the Global Positioning System (GPS) and its Local Area Augmentation System (LAAS) will be combined with Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B), and integrated via Geographic Information Systems (GIS) under the umbrella of an effort called the Chicago Airport System Strategic Technology Initiative (CASSTI). This technology integration provides next-generation (LAAS- based) precision approach capabilities enhancing access and efficiency, and improving delay at both O'Hare International Airport (ORD) and Midway Airport (MDW), provides airspace and ground movement management tools, establishes advanced procedures taking advantage of airborne technologies, and introduces tools to automate airport mapping and enhance facilities management. With its numerous government and industry partners, CASSTI provides a model for airports to assume research, development, and implementation responsibilities functioning as equal contributors - as the National Airspace System responds to the continually changing digital landscape of next-generation advanced navigation, surveillance, and procedures development. |
