An Overview Of The Global Positioning System Interference and Navigation Tool (GIANT)

Gary L. Green and Brian Hulbert

Abstract: The Global Positioning System (GPS) Interference and Navigation Tool (GIANT) is a mission-level constructive and repeatable GPS performance and operational effectiveness simulation that includes a user-friendly graphical user-interface. Its applications have included utility and requirements analyses, Analyses of Alternatives (AoAs), and test planning and prediction. GIANT is PC- based, is Government-Owned under the sponsorship the GPS Joint Program Office (SMC/CZE), includes a user- friendly graphical interface for setup and execution, and runs much faster than real-time. As is noted throughout this paper, many of GIANT’s models have been validated against flight test, GPS receiver output data, and other simulations. There are both a formal GIANT configuration control board and a user group that each meet twice a year. The current version is V1.1.2, with the next major release planned for February 2001 as V2.0.0. This paper provides an overview of the model for V1.1.2, noteworthy events, and past, present and future development efforts.
