FAA's SATNAV Instrument Approach Procedures

Hank Cabler

Abstract: Instrument procedures in the 21st century will be Global Positioning System (GPS) based satellite navigation (SATNAV). Supporting the FAA’s planned satellite- based augmentation system (SBAS), the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS), the FAA has begun publishing a new instrument approach procedure. This procedure, titled “RNAV”, will support GPS/WAAS operations at various levels of performance, down to as low as 200 feet above ground level. This paper describes FAA’s new RNAV standard instrument approach procedure (SIAP) and the policies associated with implementing it in the US National Airspace System (NAS).
