Navigation Architecture Alternatives Analysis

Kelly Markin, Melvin Zeltser, James Reagan, Vince Massimini

Abstract: This paper presents an overview of a detailed development and performance assessment of alternative navigation architectures. This alternatives analysis is one of several parts of an ongoing FAA satellite navigation investment analysis. Several alternative architectures are developed that are capable of meeting operational performance objectives using various mixes of satellite navigation assets and ground-based navaids. These alternatives are then assessed in terms of technical and operational performance, using a variety of availability and coverage analysis tools. Based on the results of these analyses, a recommended set of alternatives is defined for detailed economic analysis by the cost, benefits, and risk analysis teams participating in the FAA’s satellite navigation investment analysis.
