Possible VDB Formatting for Multi-Constellation / Multi-Frequency GBAS Services

Abstract: A Multi-Constellation / Multi-Frequency GBAS service could bring significant benefits compared to other GBAS services. Expecially due to the use of a second GNSS frequency, the threat due to ionospheric delays could be mitigated very effectively. This paper presents a proposal for a new VDB format definition addressing the needs for future Multi-Constellation / Multi-Frequency GBAS services. By adding more messages to the VHF Data Broadcast (VDB), its capacity becomes the limiting factor. Thus all proposed changes are analyzed with respect to VDB capacity based on scenarios for different GBAS setups. In order to ensure the backwards compatibility of these messages, hardware-in-the-loop have been conducted showing no adverse effects on existing GBAS processing equipment.
