Experimental Validation of the D-optimal Redundant Configuration

Abstract: In this paper, an experimental validation to prove the D-optimal redundant gyro configuration is proposed. The D-optimal redundant gyro configuration was presented using D-optimal criteria and real code genetic algorithm (RCGA) before. In order to validate the navigation performance at practice level, a material object of the Doptimal redundant gyro configuration is achieved using Solidworks software. To estimate navigation performance of the D-optimal redundant gyro configuration, an error model is analyzed. Then, the calibration procedure by rate test is presented. To estimate navigation performance of the D-optimal redundant gyro configuration under different environmental temperature conditions, thermal test is also raised. Moreover, in order to validate navigation performance of the D-optimal redundant gyro configuration comprehensively, a rate trajectory is simulated by single-axis turntable. It is shown that navigation performance of the D-optimal redundant gyro configuration is roughly equivalent to that of the dodecahedron redundant gyro configuration. Under different environmental temperature conditions, navigation performance of the D-optimal redundant gyro configuration is a little better than that of the dodecahedron redundant gyro configuration. By means of the rate trajectory given, it also can be achieved that navigation performance of the D-optimal redundant gyro configuration and the dodecahedron redundant gyro configuration is almost the same. However, on the basis of the equivalent navigation performance, the volume of the D-optimal redundant gyro configuration is only 52% of that of the dodecahedron redundant gyro configuration. The D-optimal redundant configuration design method proposed before can be proved to be efficient in designing redundant sensor configuration.
