Abstract: Recent ESA research activities within the GNSS Evolution Programme (EGEP ID71 Galileo 2nd Generation Satellite Study – Phase A/B1 (AO/2- 1607/13/NL/CVG)) and within the General Study Programme (GSP), are investigating the possibility to equip the 2nd Generation (G2G) of Galileo Space Segment with enhanced capabilities with respect to the 1st Generation (G1G). The present work shows a potential simple yet efficient way to embed a new data signal into the existing Galileo E1 signal multiplex schema, thus increasing the total number of transmitted signal components from three to four. The method, developed by TAS-I and WISER in the frame of the EGEP SSeG study, consists of extending the current Galileo multiplexing scheme through the application of a family of modified BOC waveforms on the new E1-D component, that the authors have called IBOC(m,n), where the “I” stands for “Intermittent”. The benefits coming from the proposed solution would be several: the full backward compatibility at the user level, a simple implementation in the signal generation unit, a constant-envelope signal with an outstanding multiplexing efficiency close to 0.99 in the particular case being assessed, a limited number of constellation points, and also the possibility to control the power of the new signal component for a seamless and progressive insertion on the transmitted multiplex. The simulations performed in TAS-I premises demonstrate the feasibility and signal performance of the proposed solution, with minor drawbacks.
