Abstract: | There have been increased interests in High Altitude Long Endurance (HALE) Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) which operates in the stratosphere with duration of several days (or months) without landing. It is expected that HALE UAV can be utilized for various purposes include both military and civil applications. Among various applications, the focus of this paper is in the application of HALE UAV on the improvement of Global Positioning System (GPS) using pseudolite, particularly in cases of multi-purpose operations of HALE UAV. The trajectory of HALE UAV can be designed only for the navigation application, but it also can be designed for other purposes. For instance, HALE UAV flies in high altitude around the urban area for the operation of environmental observation, and it also broadcasts signals like that of GPS satellite at the same time. In the aspect of navigation, this can increase the availability of positioning and improving the Dilution of Precision (DOP) particularly for GPS signal-blocked area such as shadowed region by tall buildings. For these multi-purpose operations, simulations are performed to analyze the increased navigation performance in the aspect of satellite visibility and DOPs of users in urban canyon. For simulations, flight trajectories of HALE UAV considering the environments of stratosphere and operational characteristics of solar powered HALE UAV, and real geographical buildings data in Seoul are considered. The simulation results display that HALE UAV can follow the designed trajectory in some measure even when the flight profile of HALE UAV and the wind of stratosphere are considered. With properly generated trajectories of HALE UAV, the results display that pseudolite equipped HALE UAV has its potentiality in navigation degraded situations increasing the availability of satellite navigation system. |
