Abstract: Navigation is the ability to be able to determine own position, orientation and velocity relative to a known reference point. Over the past couple of decades, there have been a number of navigation trends to improve the ability to navigate in all environments. Today the desire is to have an integrated navigation awareness composed of multiple interdependent systems. In this study a data fusion based precision positioning system that works in coordination with a Moving Digital Map is proposed. Accurate position estimation along with accurate mapping function provides effective passive terrain awareness for airborne platforms. The sensor fusion considered in this study combines data from an Inertial Navigation System (INS), Digital Terrain Elevation Database and measurements from a radar altimeter with as well as a barometric altimeter. This paper illustrates the theory behind and describes the algorithm details employed in the high accuracy navigation system and also present simulation results obtained while evaluating the system performance.
