Abstract: | The Tactical Mapping Group of the Naval Research Laboratory, located at the Stennis Space Center, Mississippi, has developed a digital mapping system for the Pioneer Unmanned Aerial Vehicle. Sponsored by the Navy’s Program Executive Office for Cruise Missiles and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, the Pioneer Digital Map System (PDMS) will support both Navy and Marine Corps Pioneer missions by graphically displaying digital maps produced by the National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA) and superimposing overlays showing ground control station location, waypoints, air vehicle position, heading and altitude, sensor footprint and target information. The use of Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) hardware and non-proprietary software and map databases has allowed rapid development of a low-cost mapping system which may easily be adapted to other uses. |
