Australian Trials of Phase II Navstar GPS User Equipment

Ross Hardcastle

Abstract: During late 1985 and early 1986, the Australian Defence Force CADFl successfully conducted trials of Phase II Navstar GPS equipment which was generously loaned to the ADF by the USAF GPS Joint Program Office. The aim of the ADF trial was to provide preliminary scientific and Service assessment of Navstar GPS user equipment. Two low-dynamic single channel receivers and two high-dynamic five channel receivers were used to conduct the trial. The trial was expanded from the original plan to include the (civilian) Federal Department of Aviation through use of their F-28 navigation testbed aircraft. The preliminary results available from the trials have cIearIy demonstrated the utility of GPS to provide highly accurate navigation data to military and civilian users alike. The highly accurate positioning data demonstrated during the GPS trials has significant implications for future single- and joint-Service operations, a situation that has not prevailed through use of present navigation systems.
