GPS for Air Power

Gaylen L. Tovrea, Aron Pinker

Abstract: In this paper we illustrate how GPS can contribute to the Air Force’s competencies: Air and Space Superiority; Global Attack; Rapid Global Mobility; Precision Engagement; Information Superiority; and, Agile Combat Generation. We describe some on-going Air Force and Joint Services activities aimed at exploiting GPS for both military and humanitarian missions as well as conforming to a DOD-DOT/ ICAO global air traffic management system. Finally, we discuss the implications for the Air Force of sovereign and regional navigation systems, the civilian future air navigation systems, WAAS, and GLONASS.
