Impact Upon GPS User Segment of GPS Conversion to WGS-84 Earth Model

Robert W. Hoech

Abstract: This paper identifies the changes to the User Segment interface associated with GPS conversion to the WGS-84 earth model and analyzes the degradation of navigation performance which would result if User Segment did not accommodate these changes. The paper identifies and describes error components of three types: (A) Error in the user equipment (UEl navigation solution computed w.r.t. WGS-84 ECEF reference frame. (B) Additional error associated with UE output of navigation solution in geodetic or MGRS coordinates. (C) Additional error associated with interpretation of UE output by UE operator. The paper presents analytical descriptions of the above navigation solution error components in terms of local-level 3-D position and time coordinates. The analysis includes a simulation of the current GPS constellation as observed bra UE uniformly distributed in time and position on the earth's surface. The results of this simulation relate error component (Al to probability distribution functions for PDOP.
