Abstract: | With the advent of more sophisticated threats and weapon systems, Naval Battle Group threat horizons are expanding significantly. This is resulting in much wider dispersions of the Battle Group elements, with the concommitant requirements for greater degree of multi-platform coordination. The introduction of new tactics, such as Over the Horizon Targeting (OTH-T), is placing greater demands on accurate and timely inter-platform data exchange, resulting in an increased burden on the Warfare Coordinator. Means must therefore be sought to present the decision maker with as clear and unambiguous picture of the tactical situation as possible. This paper illustrates the potential application of expert system engineering technology to the development of tactical decision aids in a Battle Group warfare scenario. For illustrative purposes, OTH Anti-Surface Warfare (ASUW) employing long-range Anti-Ship Cruise Missiles (ASCM) is taken as a sample application. |
