An Aspect of the Role of the Clock in a GPS Receiver

Edward M. Copps

Abstract: Analytic solutions for the least squares co-variance and for steady state optimal estimate co-variance have been derived. These solutions define and succinctly describe the relationship between clock performance, satellite geometry and system accuracy. It is seen that the clock attenuates the "bad geometry" effect associated with one-way ranging. The steady state solutions obtained depend on certain specializations of the system dynamics and on limit cases when the clock is either much better or much worse than the position dead reckoner.
