Abstract: | The mission of the U. S. Naval Observatory Time Service Department is to be the time reference for navigation systems, and command, control and communications system, and to make its timing data available to the Department of Defense, other government agencies and the general public. DoD Instruction 5160.51 of 31 August 1971, requires the Observatory to supply worldwide traceability to the Master Clock for all Department of Defense timed systems. This mission requires that the U.S. Naval Observatory (USNO) not only determines accurate time, but also disseminates timing information, as rapidly as possible. |
