Abstract: | After over a decade in development, the Global Positioning System is rapidly moving from an engineering concept to a space based reality. This paper will briefly look at the history of GPS, describe the system and its capabilities and present acquisition strategies. It will then focus on the operational phase-in actions being taken by the Department of Defense as GPS transitions from the developers to the operators and users. This article will cover a brief history of Global Positioning System (GPS), a system description, current program acquisition strategies, the phase-in program which includes the GPS Operational Phase-in Steering Committee responsibilities and will conclude with the phase-in planning program. This work will provide an operator's view of GPS. |
