Abstract: | In 1974 the Air Force initiated a development program for a precise, worldwide, three-dimensional, navigation system called NAVSTAR GPS. This development program successfully proved that a space based navigation system could provide accurate position, velocity and time information to a variety of users in all environments. Based on those results, in 1983 the Air Force awarded a$1.2 billion multiyear contract to Rockwell International for the production of 28 Block II NAVSTAR satellites to support a 1989 operational date. This paper will discuss the facilities required to support this production rate, the testing of the GPS qualification satellite which sets the baseline for the production program, and the current status of the Block II satellite test program. |
